Corrupción is a performance that confronts the veneer of democracy in Latin America, exposing the deep-rooted corruption that coexists with inequality. In this work, a brightly colored piñata, symbolizing the festive facade of democratic ideals, is violently struck, revealing not candy and joy, but dirt and debris—materials that represent the ever-present corruption that infiltrates every corner of society.

During the second iteration of the performance in Vienna, Austria in 2022 the tension escalated when the police arrived, adding a layer of real-world authority and suppression to the piece. Their presence underscored the performance’s themes, mirroring how power structures attempt to control and conceal the darker realities of governance. Corrupción shatters the illusion of celebration, forcing viewers to confront the uncomfortable truth that beneath the colorful promises of democracy, there often lies only decay and violence.
